Laser Fleet Fundraiser

At Hatteras Community Sailing, our goal has always been to offer Developmental Sailing Programs that give local youth the tools to compete against kids from top-level Sailing and Yacht Club programs around the world. We've been extremely successful getting our Opti sailors to respectable results in local and regional regattas — and holding their own at National events.

But some of these kids grow too big for the Optimist before they enter High School Sailing programs on the 420. That gap matters. It's critical to have a competitive One Design racing fleet that keeps these sailors improving their skills during those transitional years.

Why the Laser Radial?

Because of the sheer number of nearby racing opportunities, the Laser Radial is an obvious choice. Regional and National Laser Fleet Regattas regularly see over 100 boats on a start line — and that's exactly what a developing young sailor needs to experience. Learning how to get a front-row start when hundreds of other kids are fighting for the same space is a skill that separates good sailors from great ones.

The Laser is also an Olympic Sailing Class with unlimited growth potential. Skills learned here translate directly into collegiate, national, and international competition.

Our Goal: 4 Laser Radials

We're raising funds to purchase four Laser Radials for the Hatteras Sailing Program. Once in hand, we'll add Laser Sailing Classes for both kids and adults to our regular coaching schedule.

The boats average $2,500 each — including dolly, good rigging, and decent sails. That's a total goal of $10,000 to put four competitive boats in the water and keep our sailors growing.
